The story follows Thiel, a railway signalman, a man of solitary habits and deep emotional connections to his deceased first wife, Minna. His second marriage to Lene, a robust and domineering woman, initially provides a stable domestic life, but soon reveals Lene's harsh nature, particularly towards Thiel's son from his first marriage, Tobias. Tobias, a sickly and sensitive child, suffers greatly under Lene's cruelty, especially after she gives birth to her own son. Thiel, torn between his devotion to Minna's memory and his responsibilities to his new family, struggles to protect Tobias. His isolated post in the forest becomes a sanctuary where he retreats into memories and spiritual communion with Minna. One day, after witnessing Lene's abuse of Tobias, Thiel experiences a profound crisis. His detachment shatters, and he is consumed by a violent rage. He rushes back to his post, but his mind is fractured by the events. The narrative culminates in a series of hallucinatory episodes where Thiel experiences extreme emotional distress, perceiving Minna's ghost and the impending doom of his family. In a frenzy, Thiel murders Lene and their infant son, then, in a state of complete madness, returns to the railway tracks where Tobias was tragically killed by a train earlier. He is found by a fellow signalman, utterly detached from reality, clutching a doll's hat, and is taken to an asylum, his mind irrevocably broken by grief and guilt.
