The story follows Tip, a young orphan boy living with the sorceress Mombi in the Land of Oz. Tip dislikes Mombi and decides to prank her by creating a walking scarecrow named Jack Pumpkinhead. To his surprise, Mombi uses a magical "Powder of Life" on Jack, bringing him to life. Mombi then intends to turn Tip into a marble statue, but Tip escapes with Jack. They journey towards the Emerald City, encountering various characters and challenges. Along the way, they animate a saw-horse using the Powder of Life. In the Emerald City, they meet the Scarecrow, who has been overthrown by Jinjur and her Army of Revolt. Tip, Jack, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman, now ruling the Winkies, decide to retake the Emerald City. They use the Powder of Life to animate a Gump, a fantastical creature, to fly them to Glinda the Good. Glinda reveals that Tip is actually Princess Ozma, the rightful heir to the throne of Oz, who was transformed into a boy by Mombi. Ozma, with the help of her friends, eventually defeats Jinjur, restores order to the Emerald City, and reunites with her father, the Tin Woodman. The story concludes with Ozma ruling wisely and justly, and her friends remaining loyal companions.
