The Adventures of Roderick Random recounts the life of its titular character, an orphan from Scotland, detailing his misfortunes and eventual triumphs. Born into poverty and disowned by his grandfather due to his father's private marriage, Roderick faces a life of hardship from his early years. He is sent to school and subjected to the cruelty of his master, then neglected by his wealthy relatives who inherit his grandfather's estate. Upon his father's mysterious disappearance and his mother's death, Roderick is left destitute. He finds a protector in his maternal uncle, Tom Bowling, a sailor, who tries to secure his future. Roderick receives a university education, but his circumstances remain precarious. He experiences betrayal from friends, false accusations, and the machinations of his envious cousins. His uncle's legal troubles abroad leave Roderick penniless, forcing him into menial work as an apothecary's apprentice, where he endures further abuse and humiliation. He eventually travels to London with his loyal friend Strap, facing numerous perils on the road, including encounters with highwaymen and the general hardships of poverty. In London, Roderick attempts to establish himself by seeking employment as a surgeon's mate, but faces further setbacks and is even imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. He encounters various colorful characters, including con artists and unfortunate souls, who populate the grimy streets of the city. His fortunes take a turn when he is taken aboard a man-of-war, where he faces the brutality of the naval service but also finds allies and opportunities for advancement. He survives perilous battles, fevers, and the harsh discipline of the sea, all while maintaining his loyalty to his friends and his love for Narcissa, a woman he met earlier in his life. After a long and eventful sea voyage, Roderick returns to England, reunites with his long-lost father, and discovers his uncle has secured him a promising future. He eventually marries Narcissa, overcoming the obstacles posed by her brother and societal expectations. The novel concludes with Roderick finding a measure of peace and prosperity, having navigated a life filled with adversity and adventure.
