The story follows Tom Sawyer, a mischievous boy growing up along the Mississippi River. He lives with his Aunt Polly and half-brother Sid in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri. Tom's adventures begin with his schemes to avoid work and his interactions with friends and family. Tom's escapades include a fight with a new boy, tricking his friends into whitewashing a fence for him by making it seem like a privilege, and attending Sunday school and church where he tries to impress a new girl, Becky Thatcher, by winning a Bible for memorizing verses. His attempts to gain attention often lead to trouble, like getting whipped for a lie Sid tells about his collar or getting into scrapes that endear him to Aunt Polly despite her attempts at discipline. Tom's most significant adventure involves his friend Huckleberry Finn, a societal outcast, and Joe Harper. They run away to an island to become pirates, seeking freedom from the constraints of their civilized lives. During their time as pirates, they witness a murder in the graveyard by Injun Joe and Muff Potter, a drunken man who is subsequently framed for the crime. Tom and Huck vow to keep silent, but Tom's conscience eventually compels him to testify at Muff Potter's trial, saving him from wrongful conviction. Tom and Huck later embark on a treasure hunt, inspired by local legends. Their quest leads them to the haunted Jackson's Island and later to a cave. While exploring the cave, Tom and Becky Thatcher get lost for several days, facing hunger and fear. Tom's discovery of Injun Joe in the cave, along with the treasure, proves crucial. Injun Joe, who had murdered Dr. Robinson and blamed Muff Potter, dies of starvation in the cave after being trapped by Tom's actions. Tom and Huck eventually find the treasure, becoming wealthy young men. The novel concludes with Tom and Huck facing the prospect of societal integration and the challenges of their newfound wealth and reputation.
